3 Remodeling Mistakes to Avoid

Are you planning to remodel your home? It’s an exciting time in your life—you get to customize your home so it fits your needs and lifestyle perfectly. Renovating can also be stressful, but it doesn’t have to be. Choosing the right company is one of the most important things to do, but avoiding these three mistakes is also helpful:

  1. Not setting a budget or being unrealistic about it. You know your financial situation best, and you also understand that remodeling can be a big investment. Failing to set a budget altogether can be a huge source of stress during (and after) the remodel. If you set a budget—and we highly recommend this—make sure it’s realistic and right for you. Older homes and larger jobs may have expenses that aren’t obvious upfront and remodeling usually costs more than you initially think, particularly if you’re unfamiliar with things that can go wrong. Which brings us to our next point…
  1. Not preparing for the unexpected. No, not every renovation is going to have a surprise problem or some kind of disaster, but it’s wise to be prepared both financially and mentally. Every little thing may not go perfectly but when dealt with professionally by the right company, it shouldn’t be an issue.
  1. Compromising your vision and not thoroughly discussing your project. This is an important one! You should love your home—and you may have a vision for your remodel. Don’t let a designer (even a well-meaning one) lead you to a choice you don’t truly want. If you have your heart set on a specific color, material, etc., a good team will find a way to incorporate it seamlessly. This involves a lot of planning and discussions. We recommend planning with both your family and remodeling company—about the process, timing, and disruptions to your everyday life.
